Roopkund Trek 2026 – Terms & Conditions, Risk Declaration & Participant Agreement

Welcome to the Roopkund Trek

The Roopkund Trek 2026 is a challenging Himalayan trekking experience through the high-altitude landscapes of Uttarakhand. The Roopkund Lake Trek involves demanding trails, steep ascents and descents, changing weather, remote mountain terrain, altitude exposure and limited access to medical or emergency facilities.

By registering for or participating in the Roopkund Trek, I confirm that I have understood the nature of the journey and voluntarily agree to comply with these Terms & Conditions, safety instructions and decisions made by the trek leadership team.

I understand that no Himalayan trek can be considered completely risk-free and that unforeseen circumstances may affect the itinerary, safety arrangements or completion of the trek.

1. Adventure Activity & Assumption of Risk

I acknowledge that trekking is an adventure activity and that participation in the Roopkund Trek 2026 involves inherent risks, including risks that may be foreseeable as well as those that cannot reasonably be anticipated.

These risks may include, but are not limited to:

Mountain & Weather Conditions

The Himalayan environment can change rapidly. During the Roopkund trek, participants may encounter:

  • Heavy rain, snowfall or hailstorms

  • Thunderstorms and lightning

  • Strong or freezing winds

  • Sudden temperature drops

  • Cloudbursts and flash floods

  • Landslides and rockfalls

  • Avalanches or snow-related hazards

  • Whiteout conditions

  • Earthquakes and other natural events

  • Difficult trail or road conditions

  • Other unforeseen environmental hazards

Such circumstances may require the trek itinerary to be modified, delayed, shortened, suspended or cancelled in the interest of participant safety.

Wildlife, Insects & Vegetation

The Roopkund Lake Trek passes through natural and forested Himalayan environments. Encounters with wildlife, reptiles, insects and other animals are possible.

Certain plants or vegetation may also cause irritation, poisoning, allergic reactions or other health problems. Participants must not consume, touch or interfere with unknown plants, animals or natural substances.

2. High-Altitude Trekking & Altitude-Related Risks

The Roopkund region involves high-altitude trekking. I understand that reduced oxygen levels and strenuous physical activity may affect my health and performance.

Possible altitude-related conditions include:

  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

  • High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

  • High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

  • Breathlessness and fatigue

  • Headache, nausea or dizziness

  • Dehydration

  • Hypoxia

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Cold-related complications

I understand that altitude sickness can occur even in physically fit and experienced trekkers.

For this reason, the Roopkund Trek may involve health monitoring and altitude-safety decisions by the trek leader or authorized team members.

If continuing upward is considered unsafe, I agree to follow instructions to rest, descend, discontinue the trek or seek medical assistance.

3. Trek Leader’s Safety Authority

Participant safety takes priority over reaching Roopkund Lake or completing the planned itinerary.

I agree that the trek leader has the authority to make operational and safety decisions based on:

  • Weather conditions

  • Trail conditions

  • Altitude

  • Participant fitness

  • Oxygen saturation (SpO₂)

  • Pulse rate

  • Blood pressure, where applicable

  • Symptoms of altitude sickness

  • Injuries or illness

  • Group safety

  • Local administration or forest restrictions

  • Any other condition that may create a safety concern

If the trek leader determines that my participation is unsafe, I may be required to stop ascending, return to a lower campsite, descend to the base point or exit the trek.

Such a decision will be treated as a safety measure and shall not be considered a failure of the trek service.

4. Physical Fitness & Personal Preparation

The Roopkund Trek 2026 is not a casual sightseeing trip. It is a physically demanding high-altitude Uttarakhand trek requiring appropriate cardiovascular fitness, endurance, strength and mental preparedness.

I am responsible for honestly assessing my own ability to undertake the trek.

Before joining, I should adequately prepare through activities such as:

  • Regular walking or running

  • Cardiovascular training

  • Strength and endurance exercises

  • Stair climbing or elevation training

  • Appropriate recovery and rest

  • Suitable preparation for long trekking days

I confirm that I have considered the physical demands of the Roopkund Trek before registering.

I also understand that previous trekking experience does not eliminate the risks associated with high altitude, weather or mountain terrain.

5. Health Declaration

By participating in the Roopkund Lake Trek, I declare that, to the best of my knowledge:

  • I am physically and mentally capable of undertaking the trek.

  • I am not knowingly suffering from a medical condition that makes high-altitude trekking unsafe for me.

  • I have not been medically advised to avoid strenuous exercise or high-altitude travel.

  • I will inform the trek organizers of any relevant medical condition, injury, allergy, medication requirement or other information that may be important for my safety.

  • I will not conceal medical information that could reasonably affect my ability to participate safely.

I understand that providing inaccurate or incomplete health information may increase risks to myself and potentially to other members of the trekking group.

6. Medical Assistance & Emergency Evacuation

The Roopkund Trek takes place in a remote Himalayan environment where medical infrastructure may be limited.

I acknowledge that:

  • Immediate access to hospitals or doctors may not be available.

  • Emergency evacuation may depend on weather, terrain, road access, government permissions and available resources.

  • Ambulance, vehicle, porter, mule or other evacuation support may not always be immediately accessible.

  • Helicopter evacuation, where available, may be subject to weather, operational and regulatory restrictions.

  • Rescue operations can involve considerable delays.

  • Medical treatment and evacuation may result in additional expenses.

I agree to bear applicable medical, evacuation, transportation and related costs arising from my personal medical condition, injury or circumstances, except where otherwise specifically covered under the applicable booking or insurance terms.

Participants are strongly encouraged to obtain suitable travel and adventure-activity insurance covering trekking, high-altitude travel and emergency evacuation.

7. Terrain & Physical Injury

I understand that Himalayan trekking trails can include:

  • Rocky and uneven surfaces

  • Steep climbs and descents

  • Narrow trails

  • Loose stones

  • Mud and slippery sections

  • Snow or ice

  • Water crossings

  • Forest paths

  • Challenging ascents

  • Difficult descents

These conditions may result in slips, falls, sprains, fractures, cuts, bruises, exhaustion or other injuries.

Equipment can also malfunction, become damaged or fail despite reasonable precautions.

I accept these inherent risks associated with the Roopkund Trek 2026.

8. Personal Equipment & Belongings

I am responsible for properly using and safeguarding my personal belongings and trekking equipment.

I understand that loss, theft, damage or misplacement of personal items such as:

  • Mobile phones

  • Cameras

  • Wallets

  • Cash

  • Identification documents

  • Clothing

  • Trekking equipment

  • Electronic devices

  • Other valuables

may occur during travel or trekking.

Participants should carry only essential valuables and take reasonable precautions to protect their belongings.

9. Travel Documents, ID & Trek Permits

I am responsible for carrying valid identification and all documents required for the Roopkund Trek 2026, including any applicable permits, government documentation or other mandatory paperwork.

Documents may be requested by government authorities, forest officials, local administration, accommodation providers or trek representatives.

Failure to carry valid or required documentation may affect my ability to participate in the trek.

I understand that the trek organizers cannot be held responsible for consequences arising from my inability to provide valid documents.

10. Personal Data & Identification Documents

Where required for trek registration, identity verification, permits, government compliance or administrative purposes, I may be asked to provide a valid identity document.

I authorize Roopkund Trek to use such information only for legitimate purposes connected with my registration, trek operations, regulatory compliance, permits and related administration.

Reasonable measures should be taken to protect participant information against unauthorized access or misuse, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

11. Alcohol, Smoking & Intoxicating Substances

To maintain a safe trekking environment, smoking, alcohol consumption and recreational or narcotic substance use are strictly prohibited during the trek, including at campsites, trails, accommodation areas, base points and other locations associated with the trekking program.

If a participant is found violating this rule, the trek organizers may immediately discontinue that participant’s trek.

The participant may be required to leave the trekking route or descend from the campsite/base area at their own responsibility and expense.

No refund or compensation shall ordinarily be payable where participation is terminated due to violation of this policy.

12. Participant Behaviour & Group Discipline

The Roopkund Trek is a group adventure. Every participant is expected to behave responsibly and respectfully toward fellow trekkers, guides, support staff, local communities and the environment.

The following behaviour may result in immediate removal from the trek:

  • Harassment or sexual misconduct

  • Threatening or abusive behaviour

  • Physical violence or intimidation

  • Repeated use of offensive or abusive language

  • Deliberate violation of safety instructions

  • Discriminatory or hateful remarks

  • Aggressive behaviour toward staff or fellow trekkers

  • Deliberate damage or misuse of trekking/camping equipment

  • Actions that put another participant or staff member at risk

  • Consumption or possession of prohibited intoxicating substances

Safety instructions apply equally to all participants.

13. Trek Discontinuation on Health or Safety Grounds

For the safety of the participant and the group, Roopkund Trek reserves the right to discontinue an individual’s participation when circumstances make continued trekking unsafe or impractical.

This may include situations where:

  • A participant becomes injured or seriously ill.

  • Symptoms of altitude sickness are observed.

  • Oxygen saturation or other vital indicators are considered unsafe.

  • The participant is unable to maintain the required trekking pace.

  • The participant requires continuous or exclusive assistance.

  • Weather or trail conditions make continued participation unsafe.

  • The participant refuses to follow safety instructions.

  • The participant’s conduct creates a risk to themselves or others.

The final safety decision of the trek leader shall be respected by the participant.

14. Fitness, Pace & Group Safety

A Himalayan trek is a group activity. Every participant must understand that individual fitness can affect the overall group.

If a participant’s physical condition, pace or behaviour significantly compromises the safety or schedule of the group, the trek leader may modify that participant’s itinerary or require the participant to discontinue the trek.

The objective is not merely to reach the destination but to complete the Roopkund Trek as safely as reasonably possible.

15. Age & Additional Medical Requirements

Participants of advanced age or those with relevant medical history should obtain professional medical advice before undertaking a high-altitude trek.

For participants aged 58 years or above, or participants whom the organizers reasonably believe may require additional medical clearance, a cardiovascular fitness assessment such as a Treadmill Test (TMT) may be requested before participation.

The purpose of such a requirement is to assess suitability for strenuous physical activity and high-altitude trekking.

If medical information indicates that participation may pose an unacceptable health risk, the participant may be advised to postpone or cancel participation in accordance with the applicable cancellation and refund policy.

16. Unpredictable Events & Itinerary Changes

The Roopkund Trek 2026 itinerary may be changed because of circumstances beyond reasonable control, including:

  • Severe weather

  • Heavy snowfall

  • Rain or cloudburst

  • Landslides

  • Roadblocks

  • Government restrictions

  • Forest or wildlife regulations

  • Local restrictions

  • Natural disasters

  • Political or civil disturbances

  • Strikes

  • Transportation failures

  • Vehicle breakdowns

  • Medical emergencies

  • Trail closures

  • Safety concerns

  • Other force majeure events

The trek route, campsite, transportation arrangements, schedule or itinerary may therefore be modified when necessary.

Reaching Roopkund Lake cannot be guaranteed when safety conditions do not permit it.

17. Local Regulations & Environmental Responsibility

The Roopkund region is part of a sensitive Himalayan ecosystem. Participants must respect local regulations, forest rules, wildlife protection measures and environmental guidelines.

Participants agree to:

  • Avoid littering.

  • Carry waste responsibly.

  • Avoid damaging vegetation.

  • Respect wildlife.

  • Follow designated trekking routes.

  • Respect local communities and customs.

  • Follow instructions issued by authorized personnel.

  • Avoid activities that could damage the Himalayan environment.

Responsible trekking is an essential part of the Roopkund Lake Trek experience.

18. Participant Responsibility & Indemnity

I acknowledge that I am responsible for my own actions, decisions and conduct during the Roopkund Trek 2026.

If my intentional or negligent actions cause injury, loss, property damage or other harm to another person, I accept responsibility for the consequences to the extent permitted by applicable law.

I agree to cooperate with the trek organizers, guides and support staff and to follow reasonable safety instructions throughout the journey.

Nothing in these terms is intended to exclude or limit any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under applicable law.

19. No Guarantee of Trek Completion

I understand that payment for or registration on a Roopkund trekking package does not create an absolute guarantee that I will reach Roopkund Lake or complete every planned section of the itinerary.

Mountain conditions can change without warning.

The primary objective of the trek organizers and trek leadership team is participant safety.

A decision to turn around, alter the route, change campsites or discontinue an individual participant’s ascent may therefore be made even after the trek has commenced.

20. Financial Responsibility During Emergencies

I understand that expenses arising from circumstances specific to my personal condition may include:

  • Medical consultation

  • Medicines

  • Hospitalization

  • Emergency transportation

  • Evacuation

  • Additional accommodation

  • Food and transportation caused by early exit

  • Porter/mule assistance

  • Other personal emergency expenses

I accept responsibility for applicable expenses unless specifically covered by an insurance policy or the applicable booking terms.

21. Termination of Participation

The trek organizers may terminate a participant’s involvement if the participant:

  1. Violates safety instructions.

  2. Consumes alcohol or prohibited substances.

  3. Smokes where prohibited.

  4. Engages in harassment or misconduct.

  5. Threatens or abuses another person.

  6. Damages equipment intentionally or negligently.

  7. Provides materially false health or identification information.

  8. Refuses reasonable instructions from the trek leader.

  9. Creates a serious safety risk.

  10. Becomes medically unfit to continue.

  11. Significantly disrupts the group or trekking operations.

Where participation is terminated because of the participant’s misconduct, violation of safety rules or personal decision to discontinue, the participant may not be entitled to a refund for unused trek services, subject to applicable booking and cancellation policies.

Any additional costs associated with leaving the trek may be the participant’s responsibility.

22. No Refund for Safety-Based Turnaround

I understand that a participant may be required to turn back from the Roopkund Trek because of weather, health, altitude, trail conditions, safety concerns or the trek leader’s assessment.

Such a turnaround does not automatically entitle the participant to a refund.

Refunds, if any, shall be governed by the applicable booking, cancellation and refund policy.

23. Electronic Acceptance

I understand that acceptance of these Roopkund Trek Terms & Conditions through an online registration form, checkbox, electronic confirmation, digital signature or other electronic method constitutes my acknowledgement and acceptance of the applicable terms, subject to applicable law.

I confirm that I have had an opportunity to read and understand the terms before participating.

24. Severability

If any provision of these Terms & Conditions is determined to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable by a competent authority, the remaining provisions shall continue to operate to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
