Short Route. Serious Himalayan Adventure.
This is not a beginner-friendly trek. The 6-day Roopkund itinerary via Bedni Bugyal is designed for trekkers who are already comfortable with demanding Himalayan terrain and long consecutive trekking days.
The journey begins early in the morning from Rishikesh as you drive deeper into the Garhwal Himalaya. The road winds through mountain valleys, forested slopes and traditional Himalayan settlements before reaching the Lohajung/Wan region.
The long drive is the first part of the adventure, gradually taking you away from the plains and into the remote mountain landscape from where the trek begins.
After arrival, settle into the accommodation, rest and prepare for the following morning’s trek. The trek team will brief you about the route, weather, equipment and safety procedures.
Night Stay: Wan Village
The trek begins from Wan with a steady climb through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests. The trail is shaded for much of the day, with the surrounding forest creating a peaceful beginning to the trek.
As you gain altitude, the forest gradually opens at sections to reveal views of the surrounding Himalayan slopes. The trail continues towards Ghairoli Patal, a quiet forested campsite and an important transition point before the route climbs towards the higher meadows.
The relatively moderate distance on this day allows you to settle into the rhythm of mountain walking before the longer and higher sections of the trek.
Night Stay: Camps
Today the trail leaves the deeper forest behind and gradually enters the higher alpine landscape. The climb continues through changing vegetation as the surroundings become more open and expansive.
The route passes through the beautiful Bedni Bugyal region, where the forest gives way to wide mountain meadows and spectacular Himalayan views. On clear days, the open ridges provide an impressive perspective of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
From the meadow region, continue towards Patar Nachauni, the high-altitude campsite from where the next day’s summit attempt will begin. The campsite provides an important rest point before the demanding early-morning climb towards Roopkund.
Night Stay: Camps
The summit day begins around 1:00 AM, well before sunrise. After a quick preparation and early start, the trail climbs from Patar Nachauni towards Bhagwabasa.
As the altitude increases, the terrain becomes progressively more rugged, with loose rocks, scree and possible snow depending on the season. The combination of darkness, cold, steep sections and high altitude makes this the most physically demanding part of the trek.
From Bhagwabasa, continue towards the legendary Roopkund Lake. After reaching Roopkund and spending some time in the area, the route may continue towards Jyunargali, one of the highest and most spectacular points of the trek.
After completing the high-altitude section, retrace the trail through Roopkund and Bhagwabasa and descend all the way back to Patar Nachauni.
The summit day requires strong endurance and disciplined pacing. The trek leader may modify or shorten the route depending on weather, snow, visibility, trail conditions and the condition of the group.
After completing the summit day, begin the long descent towards the lower valleys. The trail retraces the route through the high meadows and gradually loses altitude as you move back towards the forest zone.
The open landscapes around Bedni Bugyal provide one final opportunity to enjoy the Himalayan scenery before the trail descends into the oak and rhododendron forests.
Continue through Ghairoli Patal towards Wan/Lohajung. The significant loss of altitude brings warmer temperatures and thicker vegetation, marking the end of the high-altitude section of the trek.
After reaching Wan/Lohajung, rest and celebrate the completion of the Roopkund trek with the team.
Night Stay: Wan / Lohajung
After breakfast, begin the return journey from Wan/Lohajung towards Rishikesh or Dehradun.
The road gradually descends through the Garhwal Himalaya, offering one final chance to enjoy the mountain scenery before returning towards the plains.
The memorable six-day Roopkund via Bedni Bugyal adventure comes to an end on arrival at Rishikesh/Dehradun.
Day 4 is the longest and most demanding stage of the itinerary. The day begins around 1:00 AM, with the first sections of the trail covered in complete darkness and intense cold.
The route climbs steadily towards Bhagwabasa and Roopkund, followed by an attempt towards Jyunargali, before returning to camp. At high altitude, progress can be slow and conditions can change quickly.
Reaching Roopkund or Jyunargali is never guaranteed. Actual access depends on the conditions on the day and the trek leader’s safety assessment.
The trek leader may modify, shorten or turn around the route based on weather, snow, visibility, trail conditions and overall group safety.

This 6-day itinerary is designed to cover the Roopkund route efficiently without compromising the key experiences of the trek. It follows a more direct and demanding trail through Bedni Bugyal, allowing experienced trekkers to cover the route in fewer days than longer itineraries. The compact schedule does, however, mean longer trekking hours and less time for recovery between stages.
This package is best suited for fit and experienced trekkers who are comfortable with long walking days, steep ascents and high-altitude terrain. It is particularly suitable for trekkers who have previously completed moderate or difficult Himalayan treks and are looking for a more challenging Roopkund experience.
The route is more demanding because of its compressed 6-day itinerary, significant altitude gain, steep sections and challenging terrain. The summit section can involve snow, loose terrain and difficult footing depending on conditions. The shorter schedule also leaves less time for acclimatisation and recovery, making good fitness and prior trekking experience important.
The summit push generally begins very early in the morning, often around 2:00–3:00 AM, depending on weather, trail conditions, snow conditions and the team’s pace. An early start provides the best chance of reaching the higher sections before weather conditions deteriorate later in the day. The exact start time will be confirmed by the trek leader based on conditions.
Day 4 is one of the toughest days of the trek. It typically involves a long trekking day with substantial altitude gain and challenging terrain. Depending on the season, snow and steep sections can make the route considerably more demanding. Trekkers should be prepared for early starts, sustained climbs and slow progress at higher elevations.
Snow conditions are season-dependent and cannot be guaranteed. During periods of heavier snow, the higher sections of the route can remain snow-covered, while in other seasons the trail may have considerably less snow. Conditions can also change rapidly from year to year. Your trek leader will assess the trail and snow conditions before entering exposed or technically difficult sections.
No. Jyunargali is not guaranteed. Reaching Jyunargali depends on weather, snow conditions, visibility, trail conditions, the team’s fitness and the safety assessment made by the trek leader. If conditions are unsafe, the team may turn back or modify the route. Safety always takes priority over reaching the point.
If weather conditions become unsafe, the trek leader will reassess the route and may delay the departure, modify the itinerary, turn back, or cancel a particular section. Decisions are based on factors such as snowfall, visibility, wind, trail conditions and overall safety. The priority is to bring the team back safely rather than push for a summit or pass when conditions are unsuitable.
We recommend having completed at least 1–2 Himalayan treks of moderate difficulty before attempting this itinerary. Experience with long trekking days, steep ascents and descents, camping, and high-altitude conditions is highly beneficial. Trekkers should also have a strong level of cardiovascular fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours over consecutive days.
